When you publish a book you’ll come across a few acronyms. They look like red tape, but they are what make your work findable, citable and sellable. Here’s the essential.
ISBN
The ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is the book’s ID: a unique number identifying each edition and format. It lets the work be catalogued, distributed in bookstores and sold on marketplaces. Print and e-book get different ISBNs.
DOI
The DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is a permanent identifier for digital content — widely used in scientific publishing. It keeps a chapter or article reachable through a stable link, even if the address changes, and makes academic citation easier.
ISSN and catalog record
The ISSN identifies journals, not books. The catalog record is the page with the work’s technical data, produced according to cataloguing standards.
Do you need all of this?
It depends on the project. At Fosthera, ISBN, DOI and catalog record are included according to the contracted plan — and we advise what makes sense for your book.
